What is Storage Tank Inspection?

Storage Tank Inspection involves both in-service and out-of-service inspections of vertical and horizontal bulk storage tanks, located above or below ground. These inspections utilize a combination of techniques to comprehensively assess tank floors, shells, roofs, and structural integrity.

Storage Tank Inspection

Relevant Industry Standards

API 620 – Welded Low-Pressure Storage Tanks

Applicable for above-ground tanks with a single vertical axis.
Key Specifications:

  • Internal pressure: > 3.4 KPA (0.5 PSIG) but ≤ 103 KPA (15 PSI)

  • Metal temperature: −168°C to +120°C

API 650 – Welded Steel Tanks for Oil Storage

Designed for vertical, cylindrical, above-ground storage tanks.
Key Specifications:

  • Internal pressure: Atmospheric to 17 KPA (2.5 PSIG)

  • Non-refrigerated

  • Design temperature: < 200°F

  • Suitable for petroleum, liquid products, or water

API 653 – Tank Inspection, Repair, Alteration, and Reconstruction

Covers API 650 tanks already in service.
Sections Include:

  • Suitability for service

  • Inspection procedures

  • Reconstruction and repair

  • Welding standards

  • Examination and testing

Types of Storage Tanks

  1. Fixed Roof Tanks
Permanently affixed cone or dome-shaped roof; older types may be riveted or bolted.

  2. External Floating Roof Tanks
Open-topped tanks with a floating deck that adjusts with liquid level.

  3. Internal Floating Roof Tanks
Feature both a fixed roof and an internal floating deck, either contact or non-contact.

  4. Domed External Floating Roof Tanks
Retrofitted tanks with an aluminum self-supporting dome roof and external floating deck.

  5. Horizontal Tanks
Used for above-ground or underground service; made of steel or FRP.

  6. Spherical Pressurized Tanks
Used for high-pressure storage, supported by legs or concrete foundation.

  7. Variable Vapor Space Tanks
Equipped with expandable vapor reservoirs to accommodate volume changes.

  8. LNG Tanks
Specialized tanks for Liquefied Natural Gas, operating at −162°C, typically double-walled for insulation.
